I think my favorite thing about 3zun is that all three of them are actively trying to make 3zun work, but because they all have completely different worldviews and circumstances, the harder they try the more they push each other away. It's a microcosm of some of the themes of the novel and I love it

To elaborate...

  • NMJ thinks the way to make things work is to essentially guide JGY to a heroic path at all costs. JGY thinks he's being threatened. (He's not wrong.)
  • JGY thinks the way to make things work is to keep NMJ happy at all costs. NMJ thinks he's being manipulated. (He's not wrong.)
  • LXC thinks the way to make things work is to mediate between NMJ and JGY and not to take sides. NMJ and JGY think they're not receiving the support they deserve. (They're not wrong.)

And of course, this all ties in with the framework they have towards life. NMJ thinks life is short so honor is all that matters in the end. JGY thinks life is dangerous so you have to do what it takes to survive. LXC thinks life is complicated so you have to navigate it as carefully as you can. So if any of them tries to confront the others, they have a kneejerk reaction of "No, that's how you end up doing something dishonorable/dying/ruining everybody's lives." Which terrifies them. So conversations quickly become unsustainable, but not talking isn't sustainable either, it just makes things crumble less obviously. There's no easy solution here, because NMJ was raised to die young, JGY was raised to survive at all costs, and LXC was raised to be responsible for every life around him. How do you go about finding common ground for all three of them?

Ah, guys, just to be clear, I realize most of you probably know this but I’m seeing it framed….weirdly, so –

Tumblr is not $30M in debt. You can’t get Tumblr out of the red by giving them $30M. I mean you can, for a bit, but Tumblr is operating at a $30M deficit. That means yearly, Tumblr is spending $30M more than it earns

None of this is to say we can’t have a Crab Day and try to get that $30M covered, sounds like fun! But that just means Tumblr breaks even for the current fiscal year. Tumblr has investors that want profits (or, well, I guess it’s Automattic’s investors, but regardless they want profit), so in order for it to continue operation, it has to either become Genuinely Profitable Very Quickly, or it has to do a fundraising round of some kind and get even more investors on board, which is really just kicking the problem down the road a year or two.

And either way, the extremely slick and semi-alarming pitch Tumblr is making about all the changes it’s going to make to increase engagement and such is still going to be necessary, because that’s where the money is, unfortunately. I don’t like it either (my favorite bullet point from that pitch is that they will email people who have their notifications turned off, because sure, that sounds like it won’t annoy anyone who like me was already overly inclined to be annoyed) but like. Baby needs a new pair of shoelaces.

None of this is to be alarmist or anything, I just got a bit worried about all this talk of $30M in debt, because this is not a one-time deal.

I love this, because there’s obviously something very clever going on to analyse patterns of language, but it’s also profoundly ignorant.

Story time: this reminds me of some kids in an English class I’m in. They were doing written work and the teacher and I were going around checking their work. They had to do like, “do/do not”, and one example was “prepare”. Something like “My father does not/doesn’t prepare dinner”. I look at this one kid’s paper and this galaxy-brained child had written “My father preparen’t dinner” and it took everything in me to not lose it laughing right there like. This child saw a pattern and ran with it and I respect that.
